Sex Workers In Port Harcourt Brothel Protest Against Manager's Plan To Host Vigil for their business to prosper as instructed by a pastor

Commercial sex workers operating at Pedro Hotel in
Azikiwe Street in Mile 2, Port Harcourt, Rivers State on
Thursday protested over plan by its manager to force them
to attend night vigil expected to hold yesterday night,
Thursday July 27.

It was learnt that the sex hawkers became angry with the
manager when he insisted that every occupant of the hotel
must join the night vigil or her room would be padlocked
until the vigil is over.

The manager who did not mention his name while he was
shouting on the ladies said he has been shifting the date of
the vigil to accommodate the ladies’ view, adding that
nothing will stop him from postponing the vigil again.

He noted that the night vigil was for the interest of the
ladies and the business, stressing further that any lady who
failed to attend the vigil will see the other side of him.

Speaking to The Nation correspondent, the receptionist said
nobody is in support of the plan to host night vigil in a

She disclosed further that the manager was approached by
a pastor who now made him to believe that hosting night
vigil with the ladies will increase God’s blessings and
prosperity on the business.

She said the ladies have made their intention clear that they
are not going to attend the vigil, adding that the choice of
worshipping God is in the hand of the individual which
cannot be forced upon.

One of the sex hawkers, who simply gave her name as Rose,
said they have talk to the manager that such plan cannot
work because they are in the business which they cannot
leave to attend night vigil.

She said they are not against night vigil because sometimes
some of them worship their God and also attend night vigil
when it pleases them.

"The manager is just wasting his time, we are going to see
what would happen tonight, we are here for business and
not for some religious patronage. By tomorrow we are going
to pay our rent because we pay him every Friday of the

“How do we cope to meet up with our rent? If we attend
night vigil tonight is he going to allow us to stay in the
rooms without payment. Another question I want to ask is
that are we going to leave our customers at the room who
have already paid for daybreak, so it is not going to

Policeman breaks the jaw of 30years old lady

30yrs old woman, Name Oluchukwu Ezemaduka, is currently battling with a damaged jaw at a private hospital in Lagos, after she was said to be battered by a policeman, Idiahgbe Iyobosa.

Oluchukwu is the friend and roommate of Iyobosa’s girlfriend, Maryjane Anyagwa. The friends live on Awoyemi Street, off Coker Road, Ejigbo.

Officer Iyobosa, who is attached to a bank in the FESTAC Town, confessed to have repeatedly hit the woman in the jaw with his service boots to make sure blood gushed out.

According to Punch, Iyobosa had visited his girlfriend in Ejigbo on Saturday, January 21, at about 9pm, with a view to passing the night at her place, but met only Oluchukwu at home.

He was said to have got enraged and resorted to the assault as the victim told him that she didn’t know Maryjane's whereabouts.

Oluchukwu, who managed to speak to Punch from her sick bed, said the policeman ransacked the apartment, looking for his girlfriend.

“I was not in the room when he came. As I was about to enter the room, I felt that somebody was there; I got a torch from a neighbour and shone it in the room. That was when I knew it was him. He had scattered everywhere.

“He asked me where his girlfriend was, I didn’t answer him. He asked me the second time and I told him that I didn’t know her whereabouts. He kicked me several times with his boots, breaking my jaw. He brought out a dagger and chased me outside. It was people, who saved me.

“The pain is too much for me. The doctor said I would undergo surgeries this week.”
Her friend, Maryjane, said her relationship with Iyobosa was marred with threats and harassment, saying she was no longer interested in the relationship.

She said, “ I was not around that day. When I came back the next morning, my neighbours told me that my boyfriend came to beat up my friend because he was looking for me. He thought she deliberately refused to disclose where I was.

“He usually assault me too. Most times, he would not notify me that he would pass the night in my place. He would threaten to deal with me if I report him to the authorities or quit the relationship. I was afraid.

“ We started dating each other about a year ago. I later knew that he is married with two kids. The wife had warned me to stay away from her husband .”

An eyewitness and neighbour, Henry Okafor, said Iyobosa also attacked him that day when he cautioned him.

“He just came from nowhere and started beating the lady. He also attacked me. I didn’t fight him because he was in uniform,” he added.

Oluchukwu’s father, Mike Ezemaduka, who is based in Abuja, said he was shocked on seeing the condition of his daughter at the hospital
He said, “It was a serious injury and she will undergo two surgeries, according to her doctor.

The doctor said she needed to recuperate a little bit before he could carry out the surgeries. The lower jaw was broken. We were told that she would no longer be able to chew if she didn’t undergo the surgeries, which will cost about N700,000. The policeman’s relatives have promised to pay the bill.

daughter is not his girlfriend; she has nothing to do with him at all. Why should he beat someone, whose room he barged into?”

It was gathered that the case was reported at the Ejigbo Police Station and Iyobosa was arrested.
The acting Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Olarinde Famous-Cole, in a text message, said, “The incident was reported at the division for discreet investigation.”

Man Kills Wife And Injured Child At Dankyira Ghana

A block factory operator has allegedly killed his wife with a pinch bar and injured their seven-year-old son at Dankyira in the Ga West municipality.

The woman, identified as Faustina Owusu, 56, is said to have died on the spot, while her son, Benedict Owusu, is at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in a critical condition. The suspect, Thomas Kofi Owusu, allegedly handed himself over to the Amasaman Police and reported that he had killed his wife and his child in their rented room at Dankyira.

He is currently being held by the police.

Owusu is alleged to have committed the act during an argument with his wife about 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 30, 2016.

The cause of the argument is yet to be established by the police.

It is said the couple had been married for seven years and lived in a rented chamber and a hall room at Dankyira with the woman’s 13- year-old niece for the past four years.

According to some residents, the couple were heard screaming at each other in a heated argument for about an hour before the woman’s niece came out shouting for help after the argument had ceased.

Police investigations revealed that while the couple were arguing in their bedroom, their son and the woman’s niece were watching television in the living room.

At a point, it was said that Faustina attempted to go out of the room but Owusu prevented her by pulling her inside and threatened to hit her with a pinch bar.

It is said their son rushed into the bedroom to find out what was happening but Owusu hit his wife on the head, and when his son questioned him, the boy was also hit with the metal rod instantly.

Owusu is said to have attempted to hit his wife’s 13-year-old niece but he spared her life after the girl had pleaded continuously for mercy, amid tears.

However, police reports indicate that as soon as the girl’s life was spared, she rushed out of the room and raised an alarm.

Suspect not talking

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Afia Tenge, confirmed the incident.

She said the Amasaman Police received a complaint from the suspect around 8:30 p.m. last Sunday and when the police proceeded to the house, both the mother and her child were lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom.

The boy, who was unconscious, she said, was taken to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment, while Faustina’s body was deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation.

She said Owusu, who had been in police custody since then, had refused to talk to the police, claiming he would start speaking with the approval of his lawyer, who is yet to contact the police.

Yaya Toure Issued An Official Apology To Pep Guardiola.

Yaya Toure has issued an official apology to Manchester City on behalf of himself and agent Dimitri Seluk.

Toure has featured just once for City since the appointment of Pep Guardiola as manager in the summer, with the Ivorian playing the full 90 minutes of a Champions League qualifier against Steaua Bucharest in August.

Guardiola omitted Toure from the club’s subsequent 25-man Champions League squad, attracting the ire of the midfielder’s agent, Seluk.

The manager then made it clear that Toure would not be considered for selection until Seluk apologised for his public criticisms.

On Friday morning Seluk revealed that Toure had demanded he apologise to Guardiola, and now the player himself has spoken.

“I wish to apologise – on behalf of myself and those who represent me – to the management team and all those working at the club for the misunderstandings from the past,” read the statement.

“Those statements do not represent my views on the club or the people who work there. I have nothing but respect for Manchester City and only wish the best for the football club.

“I am immensely proud to have played a part in the club’s history and want to help City succeed further. I live to play football and entertain the fans.

“On that note, I would like to thank all of the fans for their messages through this difficult period. This means a great deal to me and my family.”

Man divorces wife on honeymoon after seeing her first time without make-up

A woman from Mpumalanga has been divorced by her husband on their honeymoon just a few days after their wedding.

The bridegroom dumped the woman after he saw her with no make-up for the first time according to a psychologist who counselled the unidentified woman.

The 40-year-old groom divorced his 35-year-old bride, said the doctor, because the husband believed she did not look as pretty as before the wedding and accused her of deceiving him by using so many cosmetics, including fake eyelashes.

Dr Molapo, consultant psychologist, said that his clinic received a request from the woman to help her overcome her psychological suffering after her divorce

Reports are that the groom took his bride to Richards Bay for their honeymoon where they had a swim but the outing turned tragic when her face became wet and her makeup reportedly washed away.

The groom said he could barely recognise his wife after the make-up was gone.

The bride wore artificial eyelashes and had undergone cosmetic surgeries before the marriage.

The couple who had met on Facebook had been engaged for three months

Ghanaian man arrested in Lagos for renting out guns to robbers

A Ghanaian, John Kojo, 22 has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly supplying a locally-made pistol to a suspected robber in the Morogbo, Badagry area of the state.

Kojo was arrested on Saturday when a robbery suspect, Banhusa Abujuny, identified the Ghanaian as the owner of the gun he (Abujuny) allegedly used for robbery.

The duo was being detained by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja. The police said the gun was “stolen from another robbery gang.”
Punch Metro reports that on Friday, October 7, some armed robbers came to Kojo’s area in Morogbo and unleashed terror on the residents.

Some residents put distress calls across to the police, while some vigilance group members mobilised against the robbers. As the robbers fled, they abandoned the pistol, while Kojo, who was reportedly around the scene, picked and hid the weapon.

According to the police, Kojo later gave the gun to Abujuny to rob. Kojo, however, said that he hid the gun abandoned by the robbers, adding that he was afraid to turn it in to the police. The Ghanaian said he was not aware that his friend, Abujuny, took the gun from his house.

He said, “I got the gun after the robbers, who attacked Oko Afo, fled. The robbers came to our area and were moving from house to house. Some residents confronted them and they fled. I was one of those who chased the robbers.

“As they fled, they left one of the guns by the roadside and I picked it. I brought the gun home and hid it. I did not give the weapon to the police because I was afraid. I did not show the gun to anyone. Abujuny is my friend. He did not tell me that he had taken the gun. I was at home last week Saturday when SARS officers came and arrested me.”

Abujuny, who said he had not robbed with the gun, stated that he was arrested during a street fight in the Alaba Market, Ojo.

He said, “I had yet to rob with the gun. There was a fight in the Alaba Market on Friday and I threatened someone with the gun.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said the suspects would be charged to court at the end of investigation.

Wenger On Ozil Against The Ludogoret

Arsene Wenger admitted "great players make the right decisions" after fearing Mesut Ozil had initially blown the chance to score a dramatic late Arsenal winner against Ludogorets in the Champions League.

Having battled back from an early two-goal deficit to draw level before the break, the Premier League side struggled to open up their Bulgarian opponents in the second half in Sofia.

However, Ozil produced a moment of individual brilliance in the 87th minute to clinch a 3-2 win that keeps Arsenal top of Group A, albeit they are only ahead of Paris Saint-Germain on goal difference, and safely through to the last 16.

Played through on goal, the Germany international lifted the ball over goalkeeper Milan Borjan before dummying his way beyond two defenders to score into an empty net.

"You know, I would say the great players make the right decisions in the game situations they face.

They always make the optimal solution," Wenger told the club's official website.

"To me it didn't look for a while like the optimal solution, but when the ball was in the net I thought it was!

"You wanted him to take maybe his chance earlier but at the end he had enough skill to prove that he was right."

Ludogorets were denied from scoring a third goal in the second half by David Ospina, as the goalkeeper made a crucial block to deny

Wanderson converting a one-on-one opportunity.
Wenger once again opted to select the Colombia international in European competition, leaving Petr Cech on the bench ahead of Sunday's derby against Tottenham.

"It is good that we have two excellent goalkeepers and this game proved why we need them," the Arsenal manager told

As well as picking Ospina, Wenger also handed fit-again midfielder Aaron Ramsey his first start since the 4-3 defeat to Liverpool on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

The Welshman set up Giroud's equalising goal as he played 75 minutes on his comeback before being replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

"We made a sloppy start, but Ludogorets are a good team," Ramsey said.

"It is a great that we have qualified for the knockout stage and now we have the big game against Paris to decide the top place."

Photos: One of the survivors of 2006 ADC plane crash in Abuja which killed 96 people tells his amazing story

On October 29th, 2006, a Boeing 737 operated by ADC Airlines crashed near the Abuja airport shortly after takeoff, claiming so many lives, including that of the then Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Maccido.

The flight carrying 100 passengers and five crew members departed Lagos to Sokoto with an intermediate stop in Abuja.
Shortly after taking off from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, the plane crashed, broke up and caught fire in a corn field. 96 people died, including a woman working on the field, who was reportedly killed after being struck by debris from the crash.

The primary cause of the crash was bad weather but the immediate cause was the pilot’s refusal to acknowledge warning given to him by the control tower not to take off due to wind shear alert.
Amid the carnage and other people who perished, nine others miraculously survived, Peter Onuka (Pictured above) was of them. Now, exactly ten years after the disaster, he has spoken for the first time about his experience. Taking to his Facebook page yesterday, October 29th, he posted photos from the crash scene, writing:

Exactly 10 years ago, I was involved in a
crash. The plane, a Boeing 737 operated by ADC Airline, was on a passenger flight from Lagos to Sokoto, via Abuja. After a short stop at Nnamdi Azikiwe airport, Abuja, the plane took off again, heading to Sokoto with 100 passengers and 5 crew members. But some seconds or a minute after takeoff, the plane began to loose altitude, crashed and burst into flames. The pictures below show the remains of the plane. At least 96 people died in the crash, my heart goes to these people and their families however, out of this wreckage God brought me out alive without serious injuries. How God saved me in this crash I can't explain but I am grateful. Today, I raise an altar of praise to God. please do me a favour if you are reading this, as you take a few seconds to lift a voice of praise and thankgiving to God on my behalf. Photo: Kidnappers Release Victims, Abduct Those Who Came To Drop Ransom

For members of a notorious kidnap gang operating in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, nothing could go wrong, but Wednesday, October 12, 2016 was the day the long arm of the law caught up with them.

The nine members of the gang, who were apprehended by the operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team in a five-hour raid that day, said they were so efficient in their criminal operations that they once kidnapped four victims on the same day.

The afternoon raid led to the arrest of Daniel Gabriel (33), Alaso Igodo (25), Akeodi Aselemi (34), Ayibinmotei Livinus (25), Anikuroka Marshal (33), Biebele Elijah (34) Efiye Anda (34), Daniel Lessor (31) and Isaac Reuben (27), all living within the Port Harcourt metropolis.

The police said the gang was responsible for most of the kidnappings that took place within GRA Phase 2, Port Harcourt, Borokiri General Area and YKC axis of Woji in Rivers State.

Saturday Punch learnt that the string of events which led to the apprehension of the nine suspects started with the abduction of a woman identified as Mrs. Okotie, who was kidnapped few weeks ago opposite the Royal House of Grace Church in Port Harcourt.

The gang was said to have abducted her in the Mazda car they used as operational vehicle.

The victim told the police that she had told the suspects that she was not feeling fine but they did not listen to her.

Fortunately for Mrs. Okotie, the car broke down along the way and the leader of the gang named Blackie, called for another vehicle, a Nissan Primera, which arrived shortly after.

“But they did not know that we had got information about them. They were on their way to the Ornage Waterside when we intercepted them. As soon as they saw us, they fled and abandoned the woman in the car along with one of their rifles,” the source said.

Few days after the botched kidnapping of Mrs. Okotie, IRT operatives who were following up on a lead, arrested Gabriel, a taxi driver, around on October 12.

When Gabriel, an Akwa-Ibom indigene living at Navy Market Borikiri, Port-Harcourt was taken in for questioning, he confessed that he had personally been involved in 15 kidnaps in the last few months in the state.

He then led the police to his house where five members of the gang were already planning another kidnap.

“When we got to his house, we arrested five of his gang members and from there, we proceeded to Enugu Waterfront where we arrested Anikuroka Marshal, the gang’s armourer. The suspects also identified Diobele Elijah and Akodi Aselemi as their spies who go around town scouting for victims.

They confessed to have three AK47 rifles, two pistols, which they use in their operations,” a police source said.

Saturday Punch learnt that in one of the kidnaps carried out by the gang, on August 10, 2016, a pastor, Mrs. Luis Ubah and one Mr. Chika Ezenwa were abducted. The same day, the gang kidnapped a business woman, Mrs. Ubah in her store, they also grabbed another victim identified as Ezenwa who was with Ubah at the time.

The four victims were taken by the gang to the Indoki Estate Waterfront.

The source explained that while on their way to the waterfront, the gang encountered a police team and instantly opened fire on the policemen.

“Inspector David Ijosi and one Corporal Dike Ledee were injured by bullets in the attack. One was hit in the leg while another was hit in the neck and the kidnappers escaped into the Isaka creeks in Okrika,” the source said.

Soon after, the gang made contact with Ubah’s husband, Bishop Prince Ubah, from whom they demanded a N50m ransom for her freedom.

During the ensuing negotiation, the ransom for the release of the bishop’s wife was reduced to N2.8m and a place was agreed on for the family to drop the ransom.

But in a dramatic turn of events, when two brothers of the bishop, Onyeka Ani and Pastor Okezie Akara, took the money to the agreed place on August 25, 2016, 15 days after Mrs. Ubah was kidnapped, the gang members decided to release her along with Ezenwa but kidnapped the two brothers instead.

The police said they then demanded another N1m ransom from the bishop for his brothers. But N750, 000 was eventually paid for their release.

Police investigation also showed that in August 2016, the gang kidnapped one Nkechi at YKC Junction in Woji Town, Port Harcourt, and she was transported to the Woji Waterfront where they ferried her by speedboat to Kula community in Akukotoru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The woman was reportedly kept in captivity for two weeks and was released after a ransom of N2m was paid by her family.

In September, a victim identified as Coachie, who was abducted around Number One Stadium, Port Harcourt, was released after a ransom of N2.5m was paid.

In his statement, Gabriel explained that he came to Port Harcourt in 2015 and worked as a taxi driver but when things became difficult for him, he moved his family back home and joined his first kidnapping gang.

According to him, he had no idea what happened to his car, which he converted from a taxi cab to the gang’s operational vehicle.

“When we were intercepted by the police that day, we left one gun in the car while escaping while Blackie escaped with one other rifle. He gave it to one of our boys, who normally kept our rifles. But after I was arrested, I took the police to the boy and they recovered the rifle and my cab,” he said.

However, in his confessional statement, Anda, a speed boat operator, said he got N200,000 each time he ferried the kidnappers and their victims to their camps across the river in his speed boat.

The suspect, a Bayelsa State indigene, said he was involved in pipeline vandalism and oil theft before the military destroyed the camps in which they “cook” the oil, referring to the numerous makeshift oil refineries that dot creeks where oil militants operate in the country.

Marshal (the gang’s armourer) on the other hand, said he was paid N40,000 per each operation.

The suspect, who is an indigene of Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State, said he usually kept the guns in an abandoned bus parked inside the Baptist Church field in Borokiri.

“I did not usually go out with them for the operations. My job is to keep the guns,” he said.

Another suspect, Elijah, a native of Okrika in Rivers State, said he was lured to the gang by his boss, whom he identified as Elvis.

According to him, his role was to assist Elvis to monitor the movement of their targets.

“There was a time I followed Elvis three times to spy on a woman we wanted to kidnap. We could not carry out the operation because our leader, Blackie did not come on time. I was also with him in GRA where we kidnapped the woman who was rescued by the police. Elvis had only been giving me little money since I started working with him. But he loved to buy me a lot of drinks,” he said.

The police said investigation on the scale of the operations of the gang was still on and that they were making efforts to arrest other members of the gang who are now underground.

Topless Selfie Student Crashes Into Texas Police Car

A US college student has crashed into a police car while taking a topless selfie behind the wheel, say officials.

Miranda Rader, 19, rear-ended the patrol vehicle while sending nude photos to her boyfriend through the social media app Snapchat, police say.

The accident on Wednesday in Bryan, about 100 miles (160km) north of Houston, caused the airbag to deploy.

The Texas A&M University student also had an open bottle of wine in a cup holder by her, according to police.

No one was injured in the incident.

The officer whose car had been hit approached Ms Rader to find she had an "unclasped brassiere" and was trying to put on her blouse, police said.

Photo: Lagos Arrests 8 Prostitutes In Gen. Azazi’s House

The Lagos State Government has arrested eight suspected prostitutes and three men in the house of late National Security Adviser, Gen. Andrew Owoye Azazi in Ikoyi area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

The arrest was part of the Lagos State Government’s clean up exercise in Ikoyi and Victoria Island which have been overtaken by illegal and abandoned structures.

Officials of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit and the police from Ikoyi Police Station stormed Azazi’s abandoned house at 5 Club Road, Ikoyi and arrested eight suspected prostitutes plying their trade in the area, along with three other men.

Most of the young women arrested were from Benue State and will be charged to court by the taskforce for constituting nuisance in the area.

“I don’t know anything happening in the compound until Saturday when they came to arrest us by police from Ikoyi Police Station, they released us to come back and pack our things, when we were inside to pack our loads, they came back and arrested us again. Nobody has come to warn us to stay away from there,” said Patience Ajoke, one of the suspected prostitutes.

Mary Augustine, a 20-year old suspected prostitute from Benue State told Pm News she was arrested because she was staying at Azazi’s house, saying she was not a prostitute but a cleaner.

According to Anjo Blessing, 24, Benue State, “I work as a cook with Mrs Essie John. I was arrested because they told us to pack out of the house. We were packing our things when the police came and arrested us. Even if you go there now, my clothes are still on the ground.”

But Taskforce chairman, Yinka Egbeyemi said the women were prostitutes and had turned Azazi’s house into a prostitute den.

“We have been there once with the DPO of Ikoyi Police Station. They sell ‘paranga’ in that place,” saying that policemen and soldiers were always seen at the place patronizing them, adding that the people living in that place had been told to vacate the place long ago, but that they refused to leave.

“During the clean up exercise, we were asked to move there again. We saw policemen and military men there and all sort of human beings. They are doing prostitution business there. We are going to charge them to court,’ he said.

Egbeyemi said the clean up exercise was ongoing and would be total, adding that the state government had issued ultimatum to owners of abandoned properties in Ikoyi and Victoria Island to rehabilitate them or forfeit them to the government.

One Of The Kidnappers Who Abducted Ogun Pupil Nabbed.

A suspected kidnapper of a four-year-old schoolboy has been arrested by policemen in Ogun State.

Wale Ogunbadejo was arrested last Friday for kidnapping Attairu Amisu, a pupil of Abdul Rahman Academy Sabo, Obalende Ijebu-Ode, at the school premises.

The kidnappers had gone to the school pretending to be a relative sent by his parents to pick him up. It was gathered that the school authorities handed over the boy to the purported relative, only for the child’s mother to come minutes later for the child.
Having successfully kidnapped the minor, the criminals, it was learnt, contacted his family and demanded N5million ransom.

It was gathered that the family immediately reported the case at the police station and a manhunt for the suspects was initiated.

According to the spokesman for the Ogun State command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), the suspect was arrested in his hideout and the child rescued unhurt.

He said: “The Commissioner of Police, (CP) Ahmed Iliyasu dispatched anti-kidnapping team with a matching order to rescue the boy unhurt. The team swung into action and their efforts paid off on Friday when the hideout of the gang was invaded and one Wale Ogunbadejo, their kingpin, was arrested. The boy was rescued unhurt.

“The victim has been re-united with his family while the suspect is undergoing interrogation; serious manhunt has been lunched for the fleeing members of the gang.”

Causes Of Examination Malpractice And How It Can Be Pervented In Nigeria

Examination malpractices have consistently remained a bane of Nigerian educational system.

Most foreigners say that the academic certificates being issued to graduates in Nigeria are no more valuable than the pieces of paper on which they are printed. Examination malpractices have consistently remained a bane of Nigerian educational system. Most foreigners say that the academic certificates being issued to graduates in Nigeria are no more valuable than the pieces of paper on which they are printed.

So what is examination malpractice?

Examination malpractice is an illegal behaviour by a candidate before, during or after the examination so that he/she can attain success easily and cheaply. Hence, the worth of the examination is violated. Examination malpractice is a cankerworm that portends grave dangers for the nation.

The major causes of examination malpractices are:

1. Laziness of students: Seriousness is thrown to the wind by many students. Most of them have little time for their studies. They spend their time attending parties and forming gangs who engage in untoward behaviour.

2. Second is large population of students in many schools. The few who do very well may be promoted or admitted into higher institutions. Students cheat therefore to excel over their mates.

3. Many students are desperate; thinking that passing the examination is a do or die affair; They want to excel by all means. Some want promises from parents fulfilled Others want to be on TV or Newspaper as the best in one form of examination or the other (though cheats hardly excel).

4. Syllabus in many subjects such as Physics, Chemistry etc. is wide and difficult for teachers to cover. The school period is shortened by holidays, shift system and late resumption by students.

5. Another cause of examination malpractice is inadequate preparation for exams. In a number of schools the teachers are few and specialized ones are fewer so students are not adequately prepared for the examinations.

6. Corrupt invigilators and supervisors: the students know that if they offers bribe to the invigilators. they will be allowed to cheat in the examination hall.

7. Lastly, there is a general trend in our society towards cheating and this is encouraged by almost all members of the population. The evil effects of examination malpractices cannot be overemphasized. Creativity and resourcefulness are hampered. It wreaks great havoc on the social, religious, economic and political lives of Nigerians.

Employees are engaged in jobs they are not suited for since the Certificate they claim to possess are not merited.

It is not my duty to reveal the ways students cheat at examinations and this is not the proper forum for such a revelation.

Some Possible Solutions to Examination Malpractices are:

1. Teachers should be trained properly in their fields. They will then have the tactics to follow on how to finish the syllabus for a particular term or at least cover a large part of it.

2. Holidays may be more in number but reduced in length as students are reluctant to resume from long holidays.

3. Guidance Counselors should be employed in all schools to guide the students on study habits, career prospects and requirement for various careers.

4. Continuous assessment should be practiced correctly. It will reduce examination malpractices as 40% of marks are accumulated from various assessment techniques such as projects and assignments before actual examinations.

5. The number of invigilators and supervisors should be increased in the exam halls. Exam officers, Vice Principals and Principals should occasionally pay visits to exam halls to observe what is going on. In this way, they could notice any cheating behaviour.

6. The students should be thoroughly searched before entering the hall. Apart from photographs, finger prints on certificates should he used for identification as no two persons, even identical twins could have the same finger print. That is why it is used in crime detection. In conclusion, solutions are only possible where there are Examination Halls, large classrooms, adequate seats and adequate number of teachers in a school. A class where theft are 150 students sitting on the floor and windows with some armed with knives and locally made pistols, an invigilator will not risk his life to prevent examination malpractice.

The government can play a very big role in curbing this menace by providing enough classrooms, desks and employing qualified teachers. And also, during an examination, the school should ensure that each student gets his/her own question paper and provide enough invigilators. The Federal government has established an Exam Ethics Committee, all Stale Government and Local Government Councils should do the same thing.

Nigeria To Ban University Diploma Courses?

Nigeria’s National Universities Commission (NUC) has abolished all diploma - sub-degree level - programmes at the country’s universities.

The NUC says it wants universities to concentrate on providing quality education to train people to run the country’s public service.

Its head Abubakar Adamu Rasheed told university vice-chancellors that it was the job of polytechnics to run diploma courses.

Critics say that over the years, Nigerian universities introduced the diplomas to gain income rather than improve people's knowledge.

And this has taken its toll on the standard of education. But it is very unlikely this ban will be adhered to.
